摘要
Ultraviolet radiation from the sun causes more than 90% of all skin cancers. In this article fabrics designed to offer protection against this radiation are assessed for their effectiveness. An example of a T-shirt is given - A T-shirt transmits about 15-20% of UV Radiation which can rise more than 50% when the fabric is wet. This is significantly higher than the maximum of 6 % transmission recommended for adequate protection. To effectively offer higher levels of protection clothing should: be constructed from materials with a tight weave or knit; cover as much of the body as possible; be loose fitting, so as to be comfortable to wear encouraging its use; and be of dark colours.
