The search for a suitable microscopic probe continued; and in 1936 Bloch suggested [2]t he possible use of neutrons. Here the interaction is much larger; although the flux of neutrons available from the prereac-tor radium-beryllium sources was inadequate for all but the demonstration of simple diffraction experiments. Fruitful neutron scattering experimentation became possible after 1945 using nuclear reactors. Pioneering magnetic neutron scattering experiments were performed by Shull and coworkers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1951 [3]. Since then neutrons have been the technique of choice for magnetic structure studies.
