In order to increase the throughput of coke ovens, that in turn would reduce the cost of coke, a pilot-plant scale, experimental work was carried out that incorporated a preheating of coking coal. It has been ascertained that, besides improvement of the heat balance, the method permitted the use of coal with higher content of volatile matter.
