The concept of the integrated services digital network (ISDN) was built on the integrated digital network and was seen as the next stage in the evolution of the public switched telephone network to provide digital services and technology down to the customer's premises. This article gives some of the background to the international studies leading to ISDN standardisation, and reviews the ISDN Recommendations (I-series) which were agreed by the Plenary Assembly at the end of the 1980-84 CCITT Study Period.
