Manufacturing automation protocols (MAPs) are a means of standardizing data communication in computer aided manufacturing. A brief outline is given of the principles involved in the application of these protocols. The basic problems occurring during the processing of real-time tasks are discussed, and concepts are presented which must be taken into account in the revision of MAP standards currently underway. The current status of this revision work is reviewed, and an analysis is presented which shows to what order of magnitude time conditions can be maintained during data communication with MAPs.
