COMPARISON BETWEEN LARGE-SCALE IN-SITU SHEAR TEST AND RESULTS OF TRIAXIAL TESTS ON OSLO CLAY.

A 12. 2 m deep and 9 m long block of clay bounded by two open slury-filled trenches 3. 3 m apart was instrumented and loaded to failure. When compared with results of stress-controlled triaxial tests subjected to the same stress conditions as in the field test, it appears that the in-situ strength is significantly higher than determined by the triaxial tests. The difference amounts to about 4 degree in effective friction angle and 17% in undrained shear strength. When the difference in strength is considered, the stress-strain characteristics are in good agreement. Refs.
