New unipolar charger for submicron particles

A new unipolar charger has been developed with minimized losses for fine and ultra-fine particles. Two opposing radioactive α-sources were used to produce ions which moved under the influence of an alternating electric field from one and then from the other side of the charger into the charging region. The charged particles are kept in the charging region using an alternating electric field. First calculations show that a Nt-product of 2 &middot 107 s/cm3 is possible. Penetration measurements of singly charged particles showed low losses for an a.c. voltage. The penetration decreased significantly for ultra-fine particles using a d.c. voltage.
