This study of graphite formation in hypereutectic cast irons had demonstrated that the presence of proentectic kish graphite directly influences the solidification of the eutectic. Eutectic graphite grows epitaxially from these portions of the kish flake where the basal plane is exposed, e. g. , the growing edges, defect locations, etc. , and austenite envelops the sides of the kish flake early in the solidification process. Subsequently, eutectic graphite is nucleated and the austenite-graphite eutectic develops from this structures.
