This article discusses these factors relative to some new requirements for flame retardancy, such as in impact PS for television cabinets, foamed general-purpose PS for structural parts and PP homopolymers and copolymers meeting the UL 94V-2 specification for monofilament, slit film, pipe and electrical uses. The purpose is to generally characterize the behavior of common types of halogenated flame-retardant additives in these resin systems and to furnish guidelines for evaluating such additives for new applications. Flame retardants in commercial use include compounds with aliphatic chlorine and/or bromine, aromatic bromine and alicyclic chlorine. Property data are tabulated.
