Very important for the acceptance of the DFN Message Service is the additional operation of gateways to the UNIX-network UUCP (Unix to Unix CoPy); to CSNET (Computer Science NETwork); to the ARPA Internet (Advanced Research Project Agency); to EARN (European Academic Research Network); to BITNET (Because It's Time NETwork) and to the Canadian part of BITNET that is called NETNORTH. Some connections can be combined; e.g. EARN/BITNET/NETNORTH and ARPA/CSNET. Already since the beginning of 1986 users of the UUCP network can be reached via the EAN-EUNET gateway at GMD-Birlinghoven (EUNET is the European part of UUCP). This is considerably supported by the central UUCP node at the University of Dortmund. As this university has also a connection to EARN at its disposal; users of EARN/BITNET/ NETNORTH can be reached via this connection as well. However; this gateway does only mean an ad-hoc solution for DFN. The official EARN-DFN gateway that has been developed in cooperation between GMD and IBM is operated by GMD for DFN from January 1987. ARPA/CSNET can be reached indirectly via UUCP; as well; a direct gateway to CSNET will be operated from the first quarter of 1987 on. It will be an installation of the CSNET software which will be carried out by GMD-Birlinghoven. Thus; at the beginning of 1987 three gateways will;
