Specific features of styrene polymerization in the presence of 5,6-dihydro-5-methyl-4H-1,3,5-dithiazine

Bulk polymerization of styrene initiated by redox systems containing 5,6-dihydro-5-methyl-4H-dithiazine was studied. Molecular heterogeneity of the polymer obtained was evaluated. When the process was conducted in the dark, dithiazine acted as a chain-transfer agent. On UV irradiation of the system, the plots of the initial polymerization rate on the concentration of an additive showed maxima or minima. The interaction of dithiazine with lauroyl peroxide was accompanied by abstraction of the most 'acidic' hydrogen atom of the methylene N-CH2-S group.
