Current studies are devoting cnsiderable effort to the modeling of the recording and read-back processes of magnetic recording. A simple yet effective static model is developed in this paper, which gives very good approximations in case of thin storage media so important in modern mass memories. A commonly used phenomenological magnetization pattern is assumed, and a comprehensive theory is presented by which the length of the magnetization transition zone can be determined. The expressions giving the resulting read-back signals are developed, and the means for simulating the behavior of the mass memories on digital computers are presented. The theoretical results are compared with experimental values, and results of other theories. The results indicate that the presented static model properly represents the main features of the recording and read-back processes.
