Permissible control ranges in the sense of a square performance index may be exploited considerably better by means of variable structure control laws than it is possible in linear feedback loops. The variability of the structure may be that the controller parameters are recomputed and updated at prespecified instances or that linear partial controllers are switched over. For both variants a design method is developed, which may be carried out relatively simply even for multivariable systems. The derivation of the method uses the suboptimal principle of repeatedly decreasing the respective rest of the performance index as given by H. Kiendl. Constraints of the state variables with variable structure control systems with controller switching may be incorporated into the switching strategy.
