More steel produced by strand casting, mill adoption of statistical process control, greater uniformity in tin mill steels, lighter tin coatings, continuation of steel can downweighting, growth of double-reduced steel, customer interest in tamper-resistant cans, prospects for steel beverage can ends and more recycling of can scrap are some of the trends, developments and quality refinements currently ongoing with steel for cans. The key reason for these trends is the need for specialized steel to fabricate the 2 and 3-piece containers that now dominate the food and other can markets.
