The rubber compounder's task in providing fire resistance to rubber products is limited to making changes to the ignition, flame spread, and growth phases of the fire. This article analyzes the burning mechanism and fire retarding methods under the following eight headings: 1) Input of heat; 2) Elevation of temperature; 3) Emission of gas phase decomposition products; 4) Mixing with oxygen to form a combustible mixture; 5) Ignition; 6) Flaming; 7) Flame spread; and 8) After glow and solid phase combustion.
