One-hit machining's ability to utilize multi-axis control and power-driven tooling can be offset by increased complexity of set-up - giving longer setting times. Which is why Martin Baker, a company that has invested substantially in modern machines, has opted for multiple set-ups. This aircraft ejection seat manufacturer has two machining cells at its Denham (Bucks) factory. These first investments in cell production were made primarily to enhance the accuracy and repeatability of components produced by reducing the number of set-ups and fixtures. Additionally, the introduction of cells has reduced lead times, typically from 120 to 20 days, and greatly improved work-in-progress and production control.
