Equations are obtained which describe the dynamics of a multimode diffracted generator (DRG) for commensurate and noncommensurate values of the excitation frequencies. Mode competition in the open resonator and in the surface wave resonator are theoretically and experimentally studied. It is shown that for a weak self-triggering of natural oscillations, the dual frequency regime in the DRG is unstable. On the basis of the obtained results, a series of effects observed in the experiment is explained.
