摘要
With the declared objective of providing safe drinking water to all difficult villages in the country during the current International water supply and sanitation decade 1981-1990, there has been an unprecedented activity in the field of rural water supply during the last 5 years. With increasing number of piped water supply schemes coming up for villages, the one single aspect that has come into sharp focus after assessing the performance of these schemes is the aspect of 'source'. There is an urgent need to study in greater detail this basic problem of inadequacy or even failure of source, analyse the required corrective measures and maintenance of these schemes so as to make them operative, workable and lasting in their design life period.
