The maximum quality of a mechanically drilled hole in a multilayer board and factors that contribute to it are discussed. These factors are: optimized drilling parameters, parameter control, optimized drill bit parameters, and effective hole cleaning. A positioning system is sought. Among the variety of techniques for support and guidance, and the split-axis design using air bearings on a lapped granite surface is selected. Ball bearing and air bearing spindles, their packaging and drilling process control are also considered.
