This paper discusses the comprehensive availability program for the nuclear units of the Arkansas Power & Light Company. This program consists of three major components: failure investigations, data collection and analysis, and availability modeling. Various management indicators which measure the success of the program are described. A rationale is developed which shows that availability is an adequate indicator of nuclear power plant reliability, and can also be readily translated to economic terms.
