A new technique for the measurement of electrokinetic (zeta-) potential by a fluidization process was developed and a suitable apparatus was built. The technique permits 'fluidization potential' (sedimentation potential) measurements under steady-state conditions. An equation to express the properties and the behavior of the fluidization potential gradient with varying solids concentration was derived by the combination of the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski streaming potential equation and the pressure-drop equation as applied to a homogeneous fluidized bed.
