Several solar distillation plants have been installed in India under a program of installing such plants in non-electrified villages and at lighthouses facing water supply problems. In this paper, a plant of 5000 lit/day that has been operating for one year, is discussed, along with the experience gained from it. Problems in construction and maintenance are discussed, along with further applications of solar distillation in the country. Also discussed is an empirical correlation relating productivity (y, liters/m**2 multiplied by day) as a function of solar radiation intensity, ambient temperature and wind velocity.
