In recent years, government and consumer groups have become increasingly concerned with the safety, and in particular, the flame retardancy of many materials. This paper presents a summary of the results of a study of flame retardants, plus limited physical property testing performed on several extrusion-coated constructions. The constructions consisted of various flame-retardant compounds and concentrates, let down in similar base resins, which were coated on both flammable and nonflammable substrates. Utilizing oxygen index, thermal stability, moisture permeation, smoke chamber, heat seal, and MVSS 302 horizontal burn rate testing, the author attempted to determine the optimum construction parameters for a flame-retardant extrusion-coated material. The paper examines pertinent properties and present trends and recommendations for future flame-retardant applications.
