摘要
Initiation of a new habitat-based program in the Caribbean with a manned saturation system - the most advanced undersea laboratory in the world availble to the scientific community - will be the 1987 centerpiece at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's Office of Undersea Research (OUR). The new 'Aquarius' habitat is designed for depths to 37 meters of seawater. Aquarius - recently renamed from the original 'George F. Bond″ - will serve as a laboratory and a home for up to six scientists who will be able to live on the seafloor for periods from one week to a maximum of 30 days. A major feature in the habitat design is system mobility, which will facilitate undersea research over a large geographic region in response to scientific requirements.
