Percentage of rigid chain length (PRCL) is the main factor to determine glass transition (Tg) of poly(aryl ether sulphone)s which have no side-group. Because biphenyl can increase the PRCL of such polymers, a series of poly(aryl ether sulphone)s containing biphenyl moieties and side-group, are designed and synthesized. All the polymers are detected by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results showed that it is not only PRCL but also side-group has great effect on Tg. An empirical formula, Tg(°C) = 9.3PRCL-530.6, about the relationship between PRCL and Tg is deduced.
