An iterative process based on the S. Petterson transformation is usually used to solve the balance equation in many forecasting schemes to determine the solenoidal wind velocity component from a known geopotential field. This paper proposes that the process be generalized by introducing an additional parameter, the range of admissable values of which are indicated. The range of optimum values of this parameter is found by numerical experimentation.
