The Secretary of Defense has recently characterized the challenge of Warsaw Pact armor as one approaching a matter of national urgency and directed the Army and DARPA to establish a major new initiative in armor/antiarmor to resolve this technology imbalance. The DARPA Tactical Technology Office and U.S. Army have responded to this directive. A key element of thls initiative is the electromagnetic gun weapon system program in which a mobile hypervelocity electromagnetic gun weapon system will demonstrate the ability to accelerate the projectile to 2-4 km/s. The prime Army player in the new program is the Armament Research; Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC). The Defense Nuclear Agency is stressing capacitor-based power supplies for the demonstrator gun as an alternative to the compulsator and homopolar generator power supplies now dominating the field. Funding for projectiles is provided by the SDIO;
