Optimizing the handling of bulk solids by means of grabs

Guidelines for designing unloading systems for bulk cargo are given. Designing a good grab is a matter of much inspiration. It is essential to take observations and perform tests in practice. The working-up of the thus acquired data into the new construction requires a clear insight into the relations between all influencing factors. Improvements of the unloading capacity cannot only be found in the construction of the grab, but also in skillful manipulation of the grab by the crane operator, the total installation of which the grab forms a part of, and the conditions set by the ship to be unloaded.
