One improvement which has enabled wire drawn from 2000 kg coils to be produced with suitably homogeneous final properties is the continuous cooling of the rod as it leaves the rolling mill. The wire rod shows increased tensile strength and continuity, while the drawn wire has increased conductivity. The process is employed on the two rolling mills operated downstream of the Aluminium Pechiney reduction plant at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
