Effects of cathodic protection potential on corrosion fatigue crack growth for a duplex stainless steel in synthetic sea water

The corrosion fatigue crack growth rate da/dN has been measured for α + γ duplex SUS 329J1 stainless steel in synthetic seawater with free corrosion and at various cathodic potentials for a frequency of 0.17 Hz. The effects of the cathodic potential on da/dN as a function of ΔK are discussed for values greater than 20 MPa&middotm 1/2 . With cathodic potentials of -0.40 to -0.80 V (Ag/AgCl), da/dN became much larger than on open circuit. Cathodic polarization potentials accelerated the growth rate considerably because of hydrogen embrittlement.
