Phase equilibria around the superconducting phase in the BaO-Y2 O3-CuO system

To clarify the phases equilibrating with the superconducting Ba2YCu3O6+x phase, a metallographical investigation has been performed. Two isothermal sections at 1173 and 1223 K in air have been precisely determined. At the intermediate temperatures, two univariant reactions have been deduced to occur as given by the reaction formula: L + BaY2CuO5⇔Ba2YCu3O6+x + CuO and Ba8YCu4O16-d + Ba2YCu3O6+x⇔BaY2CuO5 + BaCuO2. Using the reaction sequence diagram, the phase diagram is discussed.
