The temperature dependence of the optical strength of KU-2 and K-8 glass is measured for a wavelength of 1. 06 mu m and a pulse length of 1 ms. The results verify the thermal mechanism for optical breakdown. The temperature at which the surface of the KU-2 and K-8 samples incur damage are 2800 K and 1700 K, respectively. It is possible to determine the temperature dependence of the adsorption coefficient from measurements of the temperature dependence of the optical strength. A mechanism for high-temperature absorption in quartz glass is discussed.
