Specially designed grinding machines with high stability, increased power, and improved drive systems have recently become available. With these, slots and profiled grooves to a depth of one inch can be machined in one pass on flat or cylindrical work pieces with removal rates higher than possible in milling. Slot grinding of pump rotors and flute grinding of hardened twist drills are outstanding examples of this technology. The paper deals with the state of the art of deep and creep feed grinding, and explains the observed practical advantages by means of technological fundamentals derived in a recent investigation.
