The purpose of this paper is to present a summary of the current theory and practical aspects of electro-osmosis, when applied to soils. Laboratory investigations of the parameters which control the effectiveness of electro-osmosis are discussed, and variations in these parameters are illustrated. Also discussed are details which should be considered during the design of field installations. Five case histories are briefly described, to serve as examples of the types of problems that could be effectively and economically solved by means of electro-osmosis. The phenomenon of electro-osmosis involves the transport of pore water in capillaries under the influence of an electric potential.
