Disturbances in the electrical supply system exposure induction motors to a wide variety of electrical transients. Thermal power plants employ a number of large electric motor driven auxiliaries which, apart from consuming a significant portion of the generated energy, must work reliably, since the reliability of the firm power generation itself is chiefly dependent on this. A number of costly failures of these H. T. Motors have occurred in India and elsewhere. An attempt has been made in this paper to present an overview of failure modes, failure mechanisms, failure analysis and failure information recording.
