Heat transfer between a heated metal roll and paper was calculated from measured interface temperature histories of a rolling calender nip, under a range of conditions encompassing industrial practice. Results demonstrate that heat transfer is influenced by the changing paper material properties incurred by compression in the nip. Heat transfer to paper is shown to be much higher than would be expected from widely published thermal properties values. The data presented agree well with an energy balance on a large pilot calender.
