This study was undertaken in an attempt to determine if elemental sulfur was a principal intermediate species in the oxidation sequence of sulfide to sulfate during the ammoniacal leaching of the mineral, chalcopyrite. Results show that the presence of the organic phase did not significantly affect the leaching rates at the conditions used. This behavior had been observed earlier in the case of covellite.
