AERODYNAMICS OF TRAINS IN THE OPEN AIR.

The author presents a review of the literature that deals with the aerodynamic efficiency of railroad rolling stock and discusses train stability in high winds, environmental effects at the trackside, induced plows in the slipstream, design and operational implications, passing of trains on adjacent tracks, and air management of equipment. Studies have indicated that significant savings are offered to freight operations by keeping containers in close single, as opposed to irregular, groupings and by slightly radiusing the end corners of the container itself.
