Studies on the water wettability of pulverized coals are necessary to obtain fundamental characteristics of coal slurries. The authors analyzed the compositions of various coals and measured their water wettabilities by the penetration rate method. The water wettability of a fine coal has a slightly positive correlation with the number of hydrogen atoms and a slightly negative correlation with the number of nitrogen atoms, sulfur atoms and ash content respectively.
