The arc furnace is a very flexible tool for melting iron. It can melt most any type of scrap material available on the market if amounts and combinations are controlled. The installation of an arc melt unit requires that workable procedures be established, maintained and enforced to maintain the necessary controls needed for successful operations. Records of all phases of the operation must be kept in order to control cost and recognize trends that may occur from a day-to-day operation. As in any manufacturing operation, if problems are detected early, they can be headed off or corrected before they become serious. Another very important benefit of good operating records is that a base line of operation is established to measure changes in materials and methods so that a good evaluation can be made. The article is a discussion of operating experience.
