A study is described in which a homogeneous spent oil shale-water slurry was subjected to rheology tests and pipeline tests. The pipeline tests were performed in a 150 and 200 mm diameter horizontal test loop and in a 150 mm diameter vertical test loop with solids concentration ranging from 40% to 60% by weight. Rotational viscometry was performed on samples of the slurry taken from the pipeloop. A rheological model was fitted to the data and scaled up to predict headlosses for the test loop. The predicted headlosses were found to compare favorably with the actual measured headlosses.
