Bonderizing has been used to convert the metal surface to a non-metallic layer, which is integral with the base metal and with which the subsequent organic powder finish forms a strong physical bond. In this way, the conversion coating greatly improves the adhesion of the paint film to the metal surface and increases the resistance to scuffing, chipping and atmospheric conditions that might otherwise penetrate beneath and lift the film. At the same time, the conversion coating insulates the metal surface against corrosion attack; if the paint becomes scratched or otherwise damaged, the bonderized metal surface will resist corrosion for a much longer period than untreated surfaces.
