In January 1982, Canadian Forest Products Ltd. , (Canfor), Howe Sound Pulp Division, installed a Digital Equipment of Canada Ltd. (DEC) PDP 11/44 computer for process control of the Kamyr digester, bleach plant, and chlorine dioxide generator. A DEC software package, PMCS, supplied process monitoring, control, and operator interface tools while the control strategy was implemented by Canfor engineers. This paper outlines how the system works, what knowledge is required at the mill level, the system's potential for growth, and the economic benefits of using this off-the-shelf software.
