Pit wall stability, and the safety of personnel and equipment while operating on top of the basal aquifer, is essential at the Suncor oil sands mine in order to ensure a safe and productive operating environment. Given very little advance warning, an aquifer depressurization/dewatering programme was implemented. This paper reviews the salient operational, geotechnical and safety factors inherent in implementing and managing a major dewatering system.
