Cement microscopy is a valuable addition to the more usual methods of testing and analyzing oil well cements. Microscopic observation of the cement microstructure permits certain critical characteristics such as retarder response, thickening time, and compressive strengths to be predicted. Correlations between light microscopic observations and a series of thickening time and compressive strength measurements have been observed.
