摘要
Mathematical models and reported experimental data regarding the nature of damping in soils are reviewed. These models include viscous damping, Coulomb damping, and hysteretic damping. For hysteretic damping, certain concepts regarding the critical damping coefficient and damping ratio have been proposed by the author. L. S. Jacobsen's expression to determine damping ratios of materials from hysteresis loop plots are reviewed. Conclusions drawn from the study are discussed.
