Stainless steels for cryogenic applications generally are austenitic steels which, according to their composition, may or may not undergo a partial martensitic transformation under the effect of cold drawing. It is shown that very high ductility and endurance characteristics at low temperatures, together with very high yield strength and resistance characteristics, can be obtained with type Z3 CN 19-10 N and Z3 CMN 18-8-6 N steels. Optimum ductility characteristics can be achieved by utilizing the martensitic transformations which develop during cold drawing.
