摘要
Recently significant attention has been devoted to the application of linear fracture mechanics methods to investigation of the fracture characteristics of polymer materials, the mechanical properties of which depend significantly upon the temperature and rate conditions of loading. The temperature and rate relationships of crack resistance of polymers is investigated in this paper. A newly proposed method of high-rate crack resistance tests with the use of a split Hopkinson bar and a special axial cleavage specimen is employed. With its use the range of loading rates in investigation of specimens of polymethyl methacrylate and polycarbonate is significantly broadened to K equals 30,000 sec** minus **1. Disk specimens were tested at 20 degree C and minus 15 degree C. The crack growth rate was determined from the motion pictures. Crack growth rate depends linearly on the loading rate. The rates of crack resistance of polycarbonate is more than twice the crack resistance of polymethyl methacrylate.
