India's Kudremukh iron ore deposit and its development are featured here. Although the iron ore grade of this large deposit is uninspiring in world terms, the entire economics of this development have been radically altered by the use of hydraulic transport. The mine, which is due to go onstream in 1980, will produce approximately 22. 6 million tonnes/yr of material and will employ some of the largest mining equipment ever used in India. Mining, processing and transportation of the Kudremukh ore are briefly described. The disposal of tailings will largely rely on slurry pipelines which will transport fine tailings to the settling ponds.
