A Finite Element formulation in conjunction with an Eigenvalue approach is used to determine the critical buckling loads of concrete piles embedded in clay. The effect of soil stiffness is evaluated by determining the pile buckling loads in clays whose lateral resistance coefficient varied from 0.1 ksf (4.8 kN/m2) to 10ksf (478 kN/m2). The buckling loads of five, 12-m long RCC piles were determined and compared with theoretical values. It is inferred that beam-on-elastic-foundation concepts may be very conservative for evaluating pile buckling loads in stiff soils.
